Antonio Esfandiari beats stacked final table to win WPT Five Diamonds

This was not the first rodeo for any of the six remaining players in the World Poker Tour Doyle Brunson Five Diamond Poker Classic; the resumes boasted by the final table competitors would stack-up well against any final table in poker history. In the end it was perhaps the best known player of the bunch who was able to capture the WPT title –his second—Victory Poker pro Antonio Esfandiari.

Esfandiari, known as the “Magician” in the poker world, was amongst the chip leaders throughout the tournament, but ran into some trouble and was nearly eliminated just before the final table. However, The Magician was able to live up to his nickname, weather the storm, and put himself back into position heading into the final day of play.

Esfandiari was able to outlast WSOP bracelet winner and long-time tournament pro Ted Lawson, poker pro Kirk Morrison, 2010 WSOP runner-up John Racener, and Go Daddy girl and poker superstar Vanessa Rousso in order to make it to heads-up play against young poker star Andrew Robl.

Here is a look at how the final six participants fared in the WPT Five Diamonds Poker Classic:

  1. Antonio Esfandiari $870,124
  2. Andrew Robl $549,003
  3. Vanessa Rousso $358,964
  4. John Racener $232,271
  5. Kirk Morrison $168,924
  6. Ted Lawson $126,693

This was Esfandiari’s first major tournament victory since he captured the 2004 LA Poker Classic, which was also a WPT event.
