Governor O’Malley of Maryland Discourages Legalization of Online Poker

The issue on whether online poker should be legalized or not has been going on for quite a long while now, as there are valid reasons that online poker could be beneficial to the US in general, and there are also reasons to which it could be the opposite. Maryland’s governor, Martin O’Malley wrote to the co-chairmen of the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction the reasons how online poker could just well be the opposite.

Pros to Legalized Online Poker

The Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction is the ‘supercommittee’ that was assigned to find ways to get around a staggering amount of $1.5 trillion for the federal debt savings. Legalizing online poker in the US in general can result to a stable amount of revenue each year, aside from the fact that quite a number of people will be presented with job opportunities as well. If ever things result to the legalization and regulation of online poker, the select committee tasked to finding a source of revenue will have a lighter time getting that budget as they see the legalization of online poker to be an opportunity to create a new federal tax revenue stream that will help them in the endeavour. Of course, there are also those who have reasons that legalizing and regulating online poker will simply result to something similar, or something that is even potentially worse.

Harmful to the Economy

The governor of Maryland, Martin O’Malley stands up against the legalization of poker. He firmly believes that the legalization of the internet based poker rooms will even have highly detrimental effects to the state’s budget deficits and will even threaten any economic recovery that it might have been already undergoing. Governor O’Malley wrote to the committee: “Such proposals would diminish significant sources of revenue for the states when we have already had to ensure significant revenue reductions.” Governor O’Malley believes that the legalization of online poker could very well put the state’s lottery, which is Maryland’s fourth largest revenue producer, in jeopardy. Maryland has legalized only six casinos that feature only slot machines, and things are doing well. O’Malley said that not only will online poker damage the revenue produced by the lottery, but internet poker can also “jeopardize teh dollars for K-12 public education, community colleges, and four year colleges and universities that are generated by new slots locations in our state”
