Lobbying Campaigns for Online Poker Regulation on an Increase

Two hearings have already been held by the House Subcommittee on Commerce and Trade on the issue of legalizing online poker. Its chairperson, Rep. Mary Bono Mack stated that it is hard to overlook the amount of money spent by lobbyists to have online poker regulated in the US. Each lobbying group works hard to get its message heard.

Lobbying Campaigns Bring the Issue of Online Gambling Regulation to the Forefront

An increasing number of lobbying campaigns have been able to bring the need for regulating online poker to the forefront. Supporters are making their voices heard through posts on Facebook and Twitter. John Pappas, the Executive Director of Poker Players Alliance (PPA), stated that federal legislation is what the PPA desires. More than a million has already been spent by PPA this year for sending lobbyists to Washington to gather support in favor of federal legislations to regulate online poker.

Lobbying is One among the Efforts Made to Legalize Online Poker

John Pappas admitted the fact that lobbying is a powerful way of putting across the opinion of a group. However, it is only one among the many efforts made by poker pros in the industry to legalize the game. John said that the efforts made by poker players who are members of the PPA hold significant importance. A large number of letters have been sent to Capitol Hill. Personal visits to the Capitol Hill have also been made by players.

Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act Coming in the Way of Regulating Online Poker

The major factor that is coming in the way of regulating online poker in the US is the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), which was passed in the year 2006. According to this law, financial companies and institutions are not allowed to facilitate monetary transactions of online gambling companies. Lawmakers are still unsure of whether the UIGEA has provisions for individual states to have their own regulatory frameworks for online poker.

Two bills regarding this issue have been submitted to the Congress. One of the bills focuses on regulating online poker and the other, on legalizing all kinds of gambling. An attorney of Los Angeles, Sanford I Millar, who represented several clients in the online gambling industry, stated that quite a few big online gambling companies are working for the approval of the federal bill.
