Online poker legislation hopes alive after Barney Frank cruises to election victory

In a year where the US population was furious at its politicians it looked as though the backlash might have reached all the way up to the usually safe Congressman from Massachusetts Barney Frank (D-MA). Polls heading into election night had Frank looking at his toughest re-election campaign in years, but by the end of the night the 15-term Congressman easily defeated his opponent, Sean Bielat, by 11 points.

Frank is the biggest advocate in Congress for online gaming legislation, and this has made him the darling of poker players, not only in the United States, but around the world. For the second straight year in 2010 Frank has introduced legislation to legalize online poker and other forms of gambling, nearly getting the measure to a vote on the house floor this time around.

With Democrats losing control of the House of Representatives it will be a far more difficult proposition for Frank to introduce online gaming legislation this time around, but the measure has been making headway amongst Republicans as well, and we can cross our fingers that maybe online poker will be the impetus for Democrats and Republicans to work together in Congress.

Either way, poker players are breathing a sigh of relief now that our “Lion” in the Congress has won re-election.
