WSOP makes its first trip to Africa

Wsop CircuitWhen history recalls major events in Johannesburg, South Africa for the year of 2010 the first World Cup held on African soil will likely be at the top of the list, but another first is also taking place right now; the first World Series of Poker tournament held in Africa. The tournament series will take place at the Emerald Resort and Casino in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The event features two tournaments, a $1,100 PLO tournament which began on Monday, and a $5,000 NLHE Main Event Championship that will begin on Thursday October 28th. Also slated on the schedule for Wednesday is a Charity Event hosted by Gus Hansen, who will also stick around to play in the Main Event on Thursday. The charity tournament has a buy-in of $287, with players anteing-up $502 getting a guaranteed seat at Gus’s table.

Although the tournament has the official WSOP Circuit Series trademarks, the tournament winners will not be awarded the Gold Rings that are given to the winners of Circuit Series events in the US. Players will also not receive WSOP Circuit Series POY points.

A solid turnout could lead to more poker tours making stops in South Africa, and elsewhere on the continent – Marrakech, Morocco has proven to be a popular tournament destination over the past two years.
