Types of SNG tournaments

This article is a follow up to our piece regarding Playing Poker Sit and Go Tournaments – A Primer

It’s easy to see how a new online Sit N Go tournament player would be intimidated by the sheer number of choices when looking at the tournament lobby at a site such as Full Tilt Poker:

Standard Sit N Go

-          9 player tables with blinds of 15/30, 1500 starting chip stack, 6 minute levels, top 3 places pay

-          6 player tables with blinds of 15/30, 1500 starting chip stack, 6 minute levels, top 2 places pay

-          Heads up tables with blinds of 15/30, 1500 starting chip stack, 6 minute levels, winner take all

Turbo Sit N Go

-          9 player tables with blinds of 15/30, 1500 starting chip stack, 3 minute levels, top 3 places pay

-          6 player tables with blinds of 15/30, 1500 starting chip stack, 3 minute levels, top 2 places pay

-          Heads up tables with blinds of 15/30, 1500 starting chip stack, 3 minute levels, winner take all

Super Turbo Sit N Go

-          9 player tables with blinds of 15/30, 300 starting chip stack, 3 minute levels, top 3 places pay

-          6 player tables with blinds of 15/30, 300 starting chip stack, 3 minute levels, top 2 places pay

-          Heads up tables with blinds of 15/30, 300 starting chip stack, 3 minute levels, winner take all

Because SNG’s are so popular amongst Internet poker players there are literally dozens, if not over a hundred variations on these tournaments. For example, there are Double Up Sit N Go tournaments at Cake Poker and other sites on the Merge Network. There’s also Progessive Jackpot SNG’s at sites such as Titan Poker where depending on the buy-in, you can cash for six figures by winning a certain number of Sit N Go tournaments in a row!

Aside from the Super Turbo Heads Up SNG format (which is a near coin-toss to determine a winner) there are specific strategies that you would employ to consistently cash in these events. For example, players tend to make more mistakes in Turbo format SNG’s so a player heading in with a very disciplined strategy could do very well.

Summary

Overall, you must be prepared to make certain adjustments in order to excel at Sit N Go poker. There are minute adjustments that you must make to your game as move from say, a 6 handed SNG to a 9 handed contest. The scope of which goes far beyond this simple overview of the types of SNG’s available. There is a very rich Sit And Go Strategy resource over at Sit And Go Planet that I read regularly.

Editors note: There’s a SNG starting every three seconds at PokerStars
