Guide To Multi-Tabling No Limit Holdem Games

Competent poker players can significantly improve their hourly rates by playing several tables of online poker at once. To many new players, the thought of following the action on 4, 8 or even more tables can seem hard. However, with the right approach, setup and some adjustments to your strategy – multi-tabling can be one of the most profitable steps you take.

Before covering the practicalities I will address a common question – what is the relationship between the number of tables played and the quality of your decisions? It should be clear that you are not going to have so much time to decide on the most profitable action, and you will also miss out on betting-pattern tells from some of your opponents while playing several tables at once.

My answer is always that adding tables reduces your profit per game. However, the larger number of hands played more than balances this – making your hourly profit far higher. For example, if you make $10 per 100 hands (1 hour) currently, playing 200 hands at only $8 per 100 will give you $16 per hour instead, even though your decisions are not as good as they were with the smaller number of players, your profits will have gone up.

Since you will have less time to make decisions after the flop when multi-tabling, it can pay to take the marginally profitable ‘speculative’ hands out of your opening range. Sticking to hands which are easy to play after the flop will make multi-tabling much easier. You should also be more strict with position when multi-tabling, situations where you can take a mid-strength hand and profit from it out of position usually require opponent specific reads, something you may not have when piling up the games.

Your computer setup is important when considering whether to add more tables. A dual-monitor setup is ideal, though it is possible to multi-table on just one screen. There are two main setups, known as tiled (all tables visible) or cascaded (where the tables are on top of each other and pop up when it is your turn to act). For small numbers of tables, tiling should be fine – however as you move to 8+ it is worth experimenting with cascades, many players report finding this easier in the long-run.

Poker tools can help you keep an eye on the tendencies of your opponents and can be a big help in making profitable decisions. The best poker tools for multi-tabling come in two groups. First there are odds calculators which give you accurate odds, outs and equity information. Secondly heads-up-display programs which give you statistics on your opponents aggression, number of hands played and willingness to get to showdown. For just a small investment you can make significant profits from this information.

Get started today – playing more tables is easy once you are used to it. While you will make less profit per table on average, your hourly rate – and thus poker bankroll – can go up very quickly indeed!
