American Gaming Association Issues Statement on Online Poker

An official statement has been issued by a powerful lobbying group in the United States – the American Gaming Association (AGA) – on the online poker safety hearing that took place recently. As stated by the CEO of AGA, Frank J. Fahrenkopf, it has been made clear at the hearing that federal guidelines have to be followed to regulate online poker in the country. This will enhance the safety of customers.

Illegal Sites Have to Be Closed

The recent hearing clearly mentioned that to ensure the practice of ‘safe betting’, adherence to the guidelines set by the federal state is necessary. It will provide a safe gambling environment to American players. Underage gambling will also be prevented. Illegal sites will be shut down, as discussed in the hearing. Fahrenkopf also stated that if the safety gambling guideline is followed, jobs will be generated and the country’s revenue will increase.

The subcommittee discussed in detail, the risks that the American gamblers are exposed to, due to a few ill-regulated gambling sites. Most of the illegally operated sites are offshore, giving very little opportunity to the US to protect its online gamblers. AGA’s CEO said that the apt way to deal with the issue is to provide licenses to poker sites and regulate the industry.

Technology Used in E-commerce Adapted in Online Gambling

Most countries where online gambling is legal, like, Italy, France, Canada and Great Britain, have adapted the technology used for ecommerce. By doing so, the countries have been able to stop kids from indulging in gambling activities and also restrict fraudulent and money laundering activities, according to Fahrenkopf.

Fahrenkopf Differentiates Online Poker from Other Forms of Gambling

Fahrenkopf stated that AGA supports the legalization and regulation of online poker. In comparison to other forms of gambling, poker is very different and has been played by US players for a long time. Even today, the game is played by a large number of Americans.

Poker is a skill based game, which makes it significantly different from other forms of gambling, according to Fahrenkopf. Unlike most other types of internet gambling, poker is played between individuals and not against the house. Fahrenkopf also stated that the support seen among American customers is mostly for online poker and little for other games.

Although no specific legislation is supported by the American Gaming Commission, certain provisions will be made if any change is introduced in this regard, said the CEO. Every state will have an exclusive right to decide whether online poker should be legalized within their jurisdictions.
