Freeroll – noun
The original use of the word “freeroll” came about when Poker Rooms would offer a free poker tournament with zero entry fee for the participants. These were along the lines of other “free” promotions such as free slots play or a free bet at the Craps table. In poker slang, the word actually has a few meanings:
1. Free entry into a poker tournament
2. A player that has won their way into a larger tournament by way of a qualifier (especially if the qualifier was a free tourney or only cost a few dollars to enter) may be referred to as “on a freeroll”
3. As seen on High Stakes Poker on GSN, when two players are all in on a hand where the odds are even for them to split the pot (say they’re both holding pocket 8′s) – someone may say “it’s a freeroll” in reference to each player having great odds (50/50) to get their money back BUT the possibility remains that the board could bring four suited cards, giving one player a flush for the win.
That guy is a freeroll whore, he never plays with his own money. Instead, he’s always looking for a freeroll somewhere to try and win something for nothing.
