Brits Rock it at European Poker Awards

The WSOP may have moved to the scenic country of France, but the Brits have once again proven that they hold all the aces by winning most of the awards at the European Poker Awards.

Jake Cody

The most notable of all the Brits who managed to win awards was young Jake Cody. This guy truly deserves the limelight this year because he won not one but two of the biggest awards in the ceremony. He was named ‘Rookie of the Year’ for having had a sensational performance in the game despite the fact that he only started playing at the beginning of 2010. His beginnings were far from humble, by the way, since he practically started his career with a big bang. He won the £5k EPT Deauville where he won a whopping $1.2 million. Then, he went on to win the £5k WPT London where he won $425,492 – all that in his first year of going pro.

If Jake Cody doesn’t deserve this award, then I don’t know who does. But that’s not the end of his story just yet. Cody also won the Player of the Year Award, having won more than $1.7 million in tournament winnings throughout 2010.

Other Winners

Jake Cody was obviously the ‘It Guy’ of the awards ceremony, but there were other British pros who took the stage as well. Liv Boeree was one, having won the “Europe’s Leading Lady” Title for her achievements at the £5k EPT San Remo. James Bord got the “Outstanding Tournament Performance” title for his performance at the 2010 WSOPE where he won a whopping $1.28 million. There was also Nic Szeremeta who got the ‘Lifetime Achievement’ Award for being one of the best poker media ambassadors in the industry.

Of course, the Brits weren’t the only ones getting awards. There was also Tony G who got the Poker Personality Award for his silly antics in year 2010, namely attempting to buy Eastgate’s bracelet in order to make a collar for his doggy and inviting Isildur1 to a tournament with the promise of giving him money just so he would reveal his secret identity. and also Gerard Serra Retamora who got “Poker Staff Person of the Year” Award. Andreas Torbergsen got the “Internet Player of the Year” Award – a big achievement, considering that he was up against Patrik Antonius and Viktor “Isildur1” Blom. Of course, his $4 million in winnings from online poker alone make him more than deserving of the award. With the WSOP 2011 schedule commencing, will the Brits do just as well this year?
