Poker rumor: Guy Laliberte playing on PokerStars

Guy Laliberte, the billionaire creator of Cirque De Soleil, is likely the reason for the outrageously high-stakes tables you see on Full Tilt Poker. Long before Isildur1, Laliberte was the driving cog in the high-stakes games on the site. It now seems he has moved over to PokerStars, if rumors are to be believed.

In all Laliberte is rumored to have played under at least four different screen-names on Full Tilt Poker noataima, lady marmelade, patatino, and elmariachimacho: –apparently if you are the biggest whale in online poker you can break the terms and conditions of the site—and likely has played under more accounts than this. These four online accounts alone have lost some $23,845,229 at the Full Tilt Poker tables according to highstakesdb.com! Perhaps more amazing is the fact that it took only 177,574 hands of poker to lose $24 million, or about $134 per hand, truly amazing, and mind-boggling numbers.

The Laliberte on PokerStars rumor began when a new high-stakes player using the screen-name ‘noataima’ showed up at the PokerStars tables. Since it’s highly unusual for a new player to simply jump into high-stakes action many believe the account belongs to Laliberte. Further evidence pointing to the connection is the ‘noataima’ account originating in Montreal, the hometown of Laliberte.

I see two reasons why the account may not be Laliberte’s:

  1. The PokerStars ‘noataima’ is playing much lower stakes than Laliberte is accustomed to –$25/$50 PLO on PokerStars.
  2. Laliberte seems to like his anonymity considering he switched screen-names constantly at Full Tilt, so why would he recycle one of those well-known monikers?
