Doyle Brunson to Sit out of 2011 WSOP Main Event

Doyle Brunson is one of the most iconic figures in the WSOP. Seeing him with his trademark cowboy hat sitting in one of the poker tables, sharing a witty remark or two with the players and his fans, is something that most of us have come to look forward to with each passing year. However, it seems like we won’t be seeing much of Brunson at this year’s WSOP. The $50,000 seems to be his last tournament for a while as Brunson is undergoing something of a slump in his enthusiasm for the game.

A Long Time Coming

The poker world was deeply grieved when Doyle Brunson pretty much announced in his Twitter that he would no longer be retiring from tournament poker. One fan wished him good luck on the $50,000 Players’ Championship, to which Brunson replied with gratitude and a statement saying, “You might be watching my last tournament. If I don’t play well (up my standards), I may retire from tournament poker.” Of course, since Brunson has been eliminated from the running, it’s pretty logical to conclude that he’ll not be joining the WSOP Main Event. In fact, he Tweeted right after his elimination, “No main event for me. Maybe the DOJ will stake me.”

In all actuality, a lot of people have been expecting Brunson to make such an announcement. Last April, the industry was abuzz with rumors about Doyle Brunson quitting. Daniel Negreanu had been joking that Brunson must be bored to be needling him after busting out of a major tournament. Doyle Brunson replied, with a note of finality, “In your wildest imagination you can’t believe how bored and useless I feel. I may never go bust in another tourney, guess why?”

A Real Shame

Everybody is surely going to miss the Texas Dolly and the wit he graces people with when he sits at a poker table. It would have been epic to see him try playing in the Main Event and perhaps finishing deep in the money, perhaps even winning first place. But then again, we can’t blame Brunson for wanting out of the hectic tournament circuit. With 10 bracelets, he’s already incredibly successful. His books have also made him a legend in the poker industry. All in all, Doyle Brunson has contributed more to the industry than most, if not all, people. He has lived a full life, and after grappling with cancer, he has realized that winning bracelets isn’t all it’s chalked up to be. Hopefully, this decision to leave his tournament career will work out well for the Texas Dolly and he’ll get the happiness he deserves after this.
