Phil Hellmuth Leads the Player of the Year Race

When you mention Phil Hellmuth’s name in relation to this year’s World Series of Poker, people are most likely to remark on how he had two near misses on getting his 12th bracelet. However, what most people fail to realize is that while Hellmuth’s missing the bracelet, he’s also finishing second, meaning that he’s earning quite a bit of points for the Player of the Year race. In fact, Hellmuth is currently in the lead.

The Much-Coveted 12th

If you want to find Hellmuth in the World Series of Poker, just look for the guy dressed oddly – racecar driver, a military general, a boxer, or – seemingly his personal favorite – Caesar. Then check if he has a self-satisfied smirk on his face. If he does, then congratulations, you’ve found the Poker Brat! Really though, Hellmuth may seem terribly obnoxious at times, but that’s only because he practically has the right to. This guy has won more WSOP bracelets in his lifetime than any other. Phil Hellmuth has had 81 cashes and has won over $11 million – that’s more than what anyone else in the industry can boast of. This guy’s no longer playing for the money folks. No, he has enough of that. What he wants are bracelets. He’s looking for the 12th addition to his trophies. He already came painfully close twice this year, but was foiled by John Juanda and Eric Rodawig. The second one didn’t get him depressed as much as the first one, though. When he lost to Juanda, Hellmuth said that he was inconsolable and couldn’t even sleep because of it. So what did the poker brat do? Well, he simply played it off and won $30,000 through cash games.

Poker Brat: Player of the Year?

Phil Hellmuth’s two “non-wins” may have cost him his 12th bracelet, but then they also put him on top of the Player of the Year race. Samuel Stein and John Juanda are his two biggest competitors in this race, both of them having won a bracelet each this on one of the 32 events that have already been played. If Hellmuth continues to chase his 12th bracelet and if he actually wins one, he will certainly have a big chance to win the race. So, is Phil Hellmuth going to be this year’s WSOP player of the year? Only time will tell.
