2011 Caesars Cup: US Team Wins Trophy

The Team USA that went on to this year’s Caesars Cup’s second edition at the Hotel Majestic Barriere and Americans can rejoice as the US Team led by Phil Hellmuth triumphed over its rival, the European Team.

First, let’s get to know who’s on which team. The Team USA is led by 11 time bracelet winner Phil Hellmtuth, as Daniel Negreany, Jason Mercier, Ben Lamb and Johnny Chan. Of course, Team USA indeed included some of the best players, but on Europe’s side are Bertrand Grospellier, Jake Cody, Max Lykov, Gus Hansen, and Tony G, which all play on the same level.

The Entertainment

As you can see from the line up of players on each team, you could safely assume that things will be pretty entertaining as the teams were composed of not only the most skilled players, but also the most interesting ones. Hellmuth was all confident about himself as usual. The Europeans kept on with their trash talks, especially when it was Tony G on the spotlight. It was overall a very exciting event to watch.

The Action

Well, the team that was to be crowned as the champion needed to make three wins first. The First match of the day was between the duo of Jason Mercier and Ben Lamb and Tony G and Jake Cody. Team USA then got its first point, but it was quickly tied by Team Europe during the match. One the second match, Phil Hellmuth and Daniel Negreanu teamed up against Gus Hansen and Max Lycov. The American duo lost, much like what happened on 2009 when the two US players teamed up with each other against Europe. This edition of the Caesars Cup, Hellmuth and Negreanu lost to Europe’s full house. On the third match was the heads up match between Bertrand Grospellier and Johnny Chan. Whether Grospellier planned to bluff his way past Chan or he just overplayed a few hands, in the end, Johnny Chan triumphed with his pocket 4’s against Grospellier’s A-6. Team USA then needed only one point to win the cup, and that one point came along during the fourth match. Europe sent out Max Lycov and Team USA sent out Phil Hellmuth for the big win. Hellmuth already had a Q in his hand and the board flopped another Q. Lycov on the other hand did not see any improvements on his K-9. Team USA then had 3 wins against Europe’s 1 win, and the US team was then to take home the trophy of this year’s Caesars Cup.
