Are you dreaming of being at the WSOP Main Event?

Sometimes you can be involved in something that is small at the time but manages to grow into something bigger than anyone would ever imagine. This must be how the six poker players who gathered in 1970 for the World Series of Poker (WSOP) feel about the event now, which is in its 42nd year. The start date for this year’s event is the 31st of May and the event continues all the way through to the 19th of July but on the schedule, there is one tournament that stands out from the rest.
The Main Event is what most poker players are interested in and the 7th of July is the date that will be ringed in the calendar of poker players around the world. The first event may have only had 6 poker players but the event now draws in over 70,000 people, from 115 different countries, making this the event that every poker player and fan wants to be at.

Everyone has a chance of being there

Thanks to the number of satellite events that are happening on online poker sites, including free poker sites, everybody is in with a chance of being involved in the Main Event. The WSOP event draws in many people only looking to enjoy the occasion and grandeur while participating in many of the smaller games around the event but there is no reason why people should not consider they have a chance of playing in the Main Event.

Most poker players will allow themselves to dream of qualifying for one of these events and winning big money and breaking into the world of professional poker but then quickly let that dream pass and get back to reality. It is not an impossible dream though as Chris Moneymaker provide back in 2003. With a surname like Moneymaker you could argue that Chris was bound for better things but at the time, he was working as an accountant when he won an online qualifier to take his seat at the WSOP Main Event.

Less than $40 was all it took

Taking part in a $39 satellite tournament changed Moneymaker’s life and after his triumph, he quit his job and has been involved with poker ever since, travelling the world playing the game he loves. When it comes to having a dream, Moneymaker showed that sometimes ambition and drive can pay off and surely that is what poker is all about.

Poker is about belief, about making the right decisions and about being brave enough to make the right decisions. For less than $40, Chris Moneymaker changed his world and this is something that can happen to anyone who has the poker skills and belief to go all the way. Even if you do not harbour dreams of making it all the way and beating the best of the best at the Main Event, playing in these satellite tournaments is a great way to have fun, gain vital experience in tense poker situations and to gain some kudos in taking on other players.

The Main Event may not be happening until July but the excitement around the event is already starting to build and you can bet that some poker players are going to sleep at night dreaming of making their way onto the Main Event and walking away a big winner.
