Say Goodbye to Double or Nothing SNG Tournaments on PokerStars

The Double or Nothing Sit n’ Go tournaments have been all the rave among players on Pokerstars this past year. However, PokerStars has decided that, despite the format’s popularity among players, there’s a need to take it down and modify it. The move has caused quite a stir among the players in the community, with many people displeased at the thought of having to give up the SNG tournament.

A Tough Decision

In an announcement at the TwoPlusTwo forums by “PokerStars Steve”, it was revealed that the Double or Nothing Sit and Go tournaments would be getting the boot. Of course, there was an uproar among the players. The Double or Nothing SNG tournaments had a format in which players have only to hold on until the field is halved by elimination. When half the players have gone, the remaining players will have successfully doubled their buy-in. It was a really good format, quite profitable for a lot of people, hence its popularity. However, the said tournament became a liability when a collusion ring from China decided to target it in their rather nasty money-making scheme, in which they managed to earn $500,000.

PokerStars had to pay $2 million in compensation to players and had to revamp their security settings, restricting players from the same country to join the same sit and go tournament. But even these measures didn’t seem to be enough, as PokerStars has now decided to remove the tournaments altogether. They say that the decision was tough to make because of the format’s popularity. The last Double or Nothing Sit and Go was held last February 14, Valentine’s Day.

A Replacement

Of course, PokerStars won’t remove something good without replacing it with another good thing. They have been promoting the Fifty50 Sit and Gos. This is similar to the Double or Nothing sit and gos in that half of the field is rewarded. But then the big difference is that the reward would actually depend on the chip count. Therefore, it’s no longer enough that you hold on until the field is halved, you also have to make sure that you gain a pretty decent chip stack. This makes the tournament more interesting and, for good players, a lot more profitable. This also makes the whole thing more challenging, which is good for some and not so good for others. It all depends on whether you like a good challenge or not.
