Sorel Mizzi Accused of Cheating

Sorel Mizzi is, without a doubt, a very talented player. After all, he did win the 2010 Player of the Year Award by Bluff Magazine, add to that a very fat bank account borne out of poker. However, poker’s not the only thing that’s been fattening Mizzi’s bank account. Mizzi has been saddled with a rather notorious reputation for cheating. In fact, he has just come out from a lengthy ban at Full Tilt which spanned two and a half years. Mere days after he regained usage of his account, however, Mizzi has become involved in yet another cheating scandal.

The Story

John Racener, 2010 WSOP Main Event runner up, has just accused Mizzi of cheating at Chinese Poker. It was not Racener per se who made the post at TwoPlusTwo, implicating Mizzi on the cheating scandal, but Shaun Deeb. Deeb was apparently given permission by Racener to recount the incident to the community. Deeb said that Mizzi cheated Racener out of several thousand dollars at the PCA, which was held last January. It was Mizzi who urged Racener to play Chinese poker with him. He also incorporated several modifications, such as the use of a joker and a point system. What really matters, though, is the way Sorel shuffled his cards. Racener noticed that Mizzi was actually leaving the two bottom cards untouched as he shuffled. When Mizzi deals the cards, he tosses the bottom card onto his deck.

Racener, upon noticing this, insists upon getting that deck which Mizzi dealt himself. The latter promptly blew up and said that it’s “his hand, his deal”. Of course, Racener took Mizzi’s deck and turned up the last card to reveal the joker. Racener was on the losing end at that point, but he told Mizzi that he would not pay on account of Mizzi being a cheating scumbag.

Mizzi’s Side

Of course, Mizzi jumped at the opportunity to defend himself. He posted at the forums, professing his innocence and calling Racener’s allegations “absurd and far-fetched”. He even went on to berate the many people who believed Racener in the bat of an eyelash. Of course, with Mizzi’s history of cheating, it’s not exactly surprising why people would readily believe such stories. His past certainly doesn’t do him a big favor when it comes to credibility. Racener also said in an interview that Mizzi was begging him not to say anything to the public. Racener, of course, had no intention of hiding the incident since he didn’t think that it was fair that Mizzi would be able to continue doing so to other people.
